Shallow areas, where it lives grouped in highly numerous colonies, preferring muddy bottoms, are the typical habitat of this animal. Murex fishing is especially widespread in the Mediterranean, with higher peaks in the Northern Adriatic Sea. It is commonly sold in fish markets to be cooked.
From a nutritional viewpoint they have a very low calorie content, around 135 calories per 100 grams of product with a high content of mineral salts.
